The Story of Princess Yashodhara:
Over four immeasurable eons ago, during the time of Dipankara Buddha, a noble female ascetic named Sumitra made a vow to accompany the Bodhisatta, Sumedha, through countless lives — always as his devoted partner, supporting his journey to Buddhahood.
Reborn again and again, she stood beside him in every life — nurturing, protecting, and rejoicing in his acts of renunciation. In her final birth, she was Princess Yashodhara, wife of Siddhartha Gautama, the future Buddha.
Even when the Bodhisatta gave away their child or left royal life behind, Yashodhara never harbored anger. She remained steadfast in love and faith, choosing spiritual devotion over worldly attachments. In every life, she upheld her vow — never once straying in thought or action.
After the Buddha’s enlightenment, she entered the monastic order and became a foremost bhikkhuni in spiritual power. Despite attaining deep wisdom, she lived humbly, like a newly ordained nun. At 78, she attained Parinibbāna, having displayed miraculous psychic powers at the Buddha’s request — a radiant affirmation that women, too, can reach the highest awakening.
This statue honors Princess Yashodhara’s timeless legacy — a symbol of selfless love, devotion, and spiritual nobility.
